When the weather begins to warm in the spring, thee bottom board can be removed to allow adequate ventilation, and then easily re-insert in the fall. (To remove or insert the board takes less than five seconds). The same removable board can be used during the summer as a greasy board. Drone Cell Foundation

8½ x 16¾ Medium Brood Drone Comb Foundation

Did you know Varroa mites are attracted to developing drone brood much more than they are attracted to worker brood? By using a few frames of drone comb you can lure Varroa mites to the developing drone brood, and the mites become trapped within the drone cell when the bees cap the cells. Remove the frame of capped drone cells. Put it in a plastic bag in your freezer overnight to kill the mites. Remove from the freezer and let warm. With the capping scratcher on page 45 break open the drone cells. Then, put the frame back into the colony and allow the worker bees to clean out the cells, getting rid of the dead varroa mites and drones. After the queen lays drone eggs in these cells again, this Varroa trapping cycle is repeated. Therefore the above cycle may be repeated to capture and kill more mites. By utilizing this process a large percentage of Varroa mites are naturally eliminated without chemicals.

Instructions for installing a package of honey bees (using Hive Top Feeder):

    1. Install bees:  Remove 3 center frames.  Shake bees into the open space and replace the 3 frames.

    2. Introduce the queen: Remove the cork from the candy end of the queen cage.  Take a 6 penny nail and poke a hole thru the candy. (Be careful not to hurt the queen.)  Set the queen cage, (screen-side up) on the 3 frames that you have replaced.  Put the hive top feeder with the open end over the queen cage.  Pour sugar water into the feeder and replace the top cover.

PROPERTIES OF GREEN HEART POPLAR:

Green Heart Poplar dries easily with minimal movement in performance and has little tendency to split when nailed. It takes and holds paint, enamel and stain exceptionally well.  It is a medium density wood with low bending, shock resistance, stiffness and compression values, with a medium steam-bending classification, excellent strength and stability and more rot resistant than pine.
